On a class of optimal stopping problems for diffusions with discontinuous coefficients

چکیده
In this paper we introduce a modification of the free boundary problem related to optimal stopping problems for diffusion processes. This modification allows to apply this PDE method also in cases where the usual regularity assumptions on the coefficients and on the gain function are not satisfied. We apply this method to the optimal stopping of integral functionals with exponential discount of the form Ex ∫ τ 0 e f(Xs)ds, λ ≥ 0 for one-dimensional diffusions X. We prove a general verification theorem which justifies the modified version of the free boundary problem. In the case of no drift and discount the free boundary problem allows to give a complete and explicit discussion of the stopping problem.

On randomized stopping
It is known that optimal stopping problems for controlled diffusion processes can be transformed into optimal control problems by using the method of randomized stopping (see [2] and [8]). Since only a few optimal stopping problems can be solved analytically (see [13]), one has to resort to numerical approximations of the solution. In such cases, one would like to know the rate of convergence o...

Contributions to the Theory of Optimal Stopping for One–Dimensional Diffusions Savas Dayanik Advisor: Ioannis Karatzas We give a new characterization of excessive functions with respect to arbitrary one–dimensional regular diffusion processes, using the notion of concavity. We show that excessive functions are essentially concave functions, in some generalized sense, and vice–versa. This, in tu...
متن کاملA Note on the Continuity of Free-Boundaries in Finite-Horizon Optimal Stopping Problems for One-Dimensional Diffusions
We provide sufficient conditions for the continuity of the free-boundary in a general class of finite-horizon optimal stopping problems arising for instance in finance and economics. The underlying process is a strong solution of one-dimensional, time-homogeneous stochastic differential equation (SDE). The proof relies on both analytic and probabilistic arguments and it is based on a contradict...

We study the change of variable formula from [9, 10] in the setting where X = (X1 t , . . . , X n t )t≥0 is a continuous Rn valued semimartingale of which the first n− 1 components are of bounded variation. Given two (or more) continuous surfaces b1, b2 : Rn−1 → R that could intersect, let F : Rn → R be a continuous function which is C1,...,1,2 at all points x ∈ Rn such that xn 6= b1(x1, . . . ...
